Machine Protection

Machine Protection is a main part of the PROGNOST®-SILver and also a part (module) of the PROGNOST®-NT. See the case studies which are telling you more about this topic.

Consequential damages of failed lubrication

PROGNOST® successfully detected irregularities during the supply of lube oil at the crosshead. Based on two case studies, the following text illustrates the necessity of appropriate monitoring. The operation mode of a reciprocating compressor requires the continuous supply of lubrication. This is due to the multitude of moving parts that are required to convert the rotating into an oscillating movement. This movement is implemented by the crosshead. This component moves between two contact surfaces and is continually subject to high forces, i.e. compression and tension, as well as friction. At the centre of the crosshead, a ‘crosshead pin’ connects the crosshead to the piston, onto which, facing the side of the cylinder, the piston rod is bolted. The crosshead pin [...]

Lube oil camouflages component failures

This case study demonstrates a case where – after a safety shutdown – a hyper compressor in LDPE service was restarted after it was tripped which led to severe damage within the compressor.

Abrupt Failures Demand Automatic Shutdown

Modern, online diagnostic and monitoring systems are great things to have for safe and reliable machinery operation. Condition based maintenance, increase of uptime, efficient repairs and short MTTR with maximum MTBM – all these concepts and goals can be realized with state-of-the-art technologies and services.

Early, Automatic, Online Failure Detection

In December 2007, the online monitoring system avoided a major and cost-intensive damage at one compressor. The permanent piston rod position monitoring detected a cracked respectively a virtually broken piston rod at the 1st stage. Prior to a complete rod failure, the machine had been automatically stopped and costly consequential damages have been avoided.
