PROGNOST®-NT Performance Optimization

A loss in efficiency can often go undetected by ordinary monitoring methods. PROGNOST® continuously checks the efficiency of reciprocating machines and provides comprehensive analyses for restoring efficiency and increasing the productivity.

The efficiency of a reciprocating machine is defined by its energy consumption (drive) and the usable compression power (discharge flow at the required pressure). The dynamic pressure is usually displayed in a pressure (p) volume (V) diagram. If the dynamic pressure changes during the operation of the machine, specialized p-V analysis can detect, which components have caused the reduction of efficiency.


p-V diagram: the colored areas show the suction loss (bottom) and discharge loss (top). This diagram also shows thepolytropic exponents (expansion/compression) which help to detect leakages of sealing components such as valves,packings and piston sealing rings in early stages.

Apart from p-V diagram analyses, additional key values are calculated, monitored and recorded in a log book. This includes analyses of the compression cycle, the piston rod load and the piston rod load reversal. The analyses of these data provides operators and maintenance personnel with all the information that is required for an optimized operation of reciprocating machinery.
